Both men are American software developers, who moved to Montreal in 2004. Like many city dwellers, the couple sampled a few neighbourhoods, going from Snowdon to the Plateau-Mont-Royal and, finally, the Gay Village. They loved living in the latter so much, they hoped to stay there.
Modern, comfortable and close to everything
“When we decided to buy a condo, we weren’t dead set on the Village,” says Tobin. “As long as it wasn’t too far.”
The couple had other, more important boxes to check. For instance, the place had to be at the ground level of a duplex or triplex (no multiplexes or condo towers!), and they needed a backyard for their dog Link. A fervent cook, Tobin needed a nice, big kitchen, and the couple wanted at least two bedrooms, so the second one could be tuned into an office.
After a few weeks of intense Internet searches, Josh and Tobin narrowed it down to four condos with the help of their real estate agent. On top of being within their budget, the first place on the list was also love at first sight. It didn’t just fulfill their criteria; the apartment had been completely refurbished, in stark contrast to their former, much older flat.
“Everything was renovated,” Josh recalls. “It was completely gutted and soundproofed. There’s also new wiring and plumbing. If feels modern, yet comfy.”
Their condo is Village-adjacent, located a little northeast of the neighbourhood, near Papineau metro. For the two men, central was essential.
“Being away from downtown or a metro station was not even a consideration,” Josh affirms.
“We have the same amenities as the old neighbourhood, but we’re discovering new things,” Tobin adds.
The joys of a patio and backyard
Though Josh and Tobin are handy with repairs, they didn’t have much to do here. A little coat of paint in the kitchen was all it took. What the men especially like about their place are the two living rooms; one near the entrance, and one facing the patio in the back.
“Most people would have made that into a dining room, but we host more cocktails than dinner parties,” says Tobin.
As for the backyard, Link is the one mostly enjoying it for now. But once the spring is in full bloom, Josh and Tobin look forward to a proper housewarming.
“The deck and the backyard were key,” Josh concludes. “They’re going to be great for parties.”
