Living environment

From 1956 to 1976, the Borough of Saint-Léonard went from being a tiny rural municipality with fewer than 1,000 residents to a good-sized city of more than 78,000. An amazing housing boom is what transformed this area. A large proportion of families in Saint-Léonard are of Italian descent: their influence can be seen in the characteristic traits of the borough’s multi-family housing with its white stone façades. In recent years, construction has focused on high-rise residential buildings, notable for their eye-catching architectural style. Of course, other ethnic communities are at home here and contribute to the borough’s lively atmosphere. Local pastry shops and cafés on Jean-Talon Street have become favourite meeting places. Families also enjoy the high-quality recreational facilities that are maintained by the borough’s administration.
